How are the players chosen to play in the Premier League??

As everyone probably knows, the Premier League is put on by Barry Hearn's Matchroom organisation, and as such, it is an invitation event. Because of this, Matchroom is not constrained by any official ranking positions or other such criteria. Matchroom are free to choose whoever they like to play in their event. However, they know that to create a successful event, they also need to make it work financially for them, as well as for the players.

This means that Matchroom will always go for the 'more popular' players, and players who will make it easier to market television pictures of the event in as many countries as possible. That is why their choices are not governed by other tournament winners (not even the current World Champion is playing this coming season!), or players high on the ranking list (not even John Higgins or Ken Doherty this time around!).

Everyone knows Jimmy White is always the biggest crowd favourite, so Matchroom would choose players like him, Ronnie and Stephen, not to mention the evergreen Steve Davis. Other choices are made probably for commercial reasons, to attract the best possible crowds in the different venues where the event will be played, eg Doncaster is very close to where Shaun Murphy lives, Scotland's venues will also look forward to Stephen Maguire, while Ding Jun Hui's inclusion will guarantee televison sales of the event in the new markets in the east.

At the end of the day, it is Matchroom's choice and their decision to make as to invite the participating players.

i saw on another forum that Graeme Dott and Ken Doherty are in this time.. not that it's been officially confirmed, of course

Yes I have just checked. The official Premier League website still does not show the new season's player list and fixtures, so some of the names I have mentioned above will be incorrect. In fact, I would have thought that Graeme Dott, Ken Doherty and John Higgins would be invited this season, so we will wait and see. Otherwise, my contribution above just explains the thinking behind an event organiser when they choose players.

I also assume that Paul Collier will still do the refereeing, I have not heard anything to the contrary.

I assume that this is because no commercial agreement has been reached between Eurosport and Matchroom for the broadcast of this event. The Matchroom website will show all the international TV networks which will carry this event.

Unfortunately, we are not in Russia. I doubt that Ukrainian Television pays attention to such a game. Snooker is almost unknown for the most of the audience, it should be promoted firstly, but no one is going to promote it seriously.

In many countries, Eurosport is greatly contributing to the spread of the popularity of snooker. In some countries, this process is happening very fast, in others a bit slower. I am sure that eventually even Ukraine will be one of the places where snooker will be very popular!

well, maybe DSF will continue to show it too, at least last 2 seasons they did. so I guess you need a dish to recieve it...

P.S. I don't have DSF and possibility to watch premier league as well myself ;)
